Allen Montgomery Lewis

Sir Allen Montgomery Lewis GCMG GCVO , KStJ (born October 26, 1909 in Castries , St. Lucia , † February 18, 1993 ) was a lawyer and politician from Saint Lucia and two-time Governor General of Saint Lucia .

biography

Lewis studied after school attendance law and was after graduating as a Barrister operates. In addition, he began a political career and was a member of the Legislative Council of Saint Lucia between 1943 and 1951, before he became co-founder and first president of the Saint Lucia Labor Party (SLP) alongside George Charles in 1950 .

After the founding of the West Indian Federation on January 3, 1958, he became a member of the Federation's Parliament, but was only a member until 1959. After he was first again as a barrister and then from 1962 to 1967 as a judge at the Court of Appeal of Jamaica ( Jamaican Court of Appeal operates). Between 1967 and 1972 Lewis was President ( Chief Justice ) of the Supreme Court of the West Indian Associated States, now the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court , and then Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI).

On October 5, 1974, he was appointed governor of Saint Lucia. After the sovereignty on February 22, 1979 he was then the first Governor General and as such represented the British monarch Elizabeth II until June 19, 1980. After the resignation of his successor Boswell Williams , he followed this on December 13, 1982 in the office of Governor General and held this position until April 30, 1987.

His son Vaughan Allen Lewis was Prime Minister of St. Lucia between April 1996 and May 1997.
