history

Starting with the Zürcher Kino am See (first run in 1989), which has since been called the Philip Morris Open-Air Cinema , the series of events was extended to Basel and Bern in 1991. From 1999 to 2014 it was named after the main sponsor at the time, Orange. With the change of name from Orange to Salt Mobile , the name was Salt Cinema in 2015. After Salt left the main sponsor, the event has continued under the name Allianz Cinema since 2016 . The open-air cinema in Bern, on the other hand, was closed by Cinerent after the 2015 edition due to a lack of sponsors.

With over 53,000 visitors (2018), the Allianz Cinema in Zurich is the largest open-air cinema in Switzerland and takes place between mid-July and mid-August at the Zürichhorn directly on Lake Zurich . It has a 24.90 meter wide and 13.50 meter high screen and offers around 1,700 seats as well as various restaurants . In addition to the latest movies, the program also includes previews and special evenings.

In Basel, the Allianz Cinema usually takes place in the first three weeks of August on Münsterplatz . It is equipped with a 300 square meter screen and offers around 2,000 seats. According to the organizer, the Allianz Cinema in Basel had over 47,000 visitors in 2018.

In Bern, the open-air cinema organized by Cinerent - most recently under the name Salt Cinema - took place on the Grosse Schanze . In its last year of events, 2015, it recorded around 25,000 visitors.

In 2020 the Allianz Cinema was canceled at all venues due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Instead, the Allianz Cinema - Drive In was launched. These are drive-in cinemas that will take place in around 20 cities from June 27th.
