The Cinerent Open Air AG is Switzerland's largest open-air cinema -Veranstalterin. The company organizes cinema events in Switzerland, Germany and Australia. Other events are also held under license in Brazil, Portugal and South Korea. history

Cinerent was founded in 1978 as a film equipment rental company by photographer and cameraman Peter Hürlimann. From 1982 the company was involved in the design, manufacture and sale of film technology devices.

Since 1989, Cinerent has been the organizer of Kino am See, today Allianz Cinema , in Zurich and, since 1991, in Bern and Basel. At the same time, Cinerent developed its own ticketing system, which was later opened to third-party organizers under the name "starticket". In 1992 the company sold parts of the film equipment rental department. In 1993, the Cinerent Openair cinema concept used in Switzerland was first implemented in Düsseldorf (Germany). In 1996, Cinerent expanded its concept to Sydney (Australia). Since 1996, Cinerent has been supplying the technology for the open-air screenings at the International Film Festival in Busan (South Korea).

In 1997 the company sold its department for design, manufacture and sales of film technology equipment. In 1998 and 1999, Cinerent held three events in South Africa in the cities of Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. These had to be discontinued in 2000 due to changes in local law.

In 2002 the company began holding events under license in Brazil, initially in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and from 2004 also in Brasilia. Also under license, Cinerent expanded to Lisbon in 2005. Since 2006, Cinerent has held its second open-air cinema in Australia in Melbourne.

The company also ran its own ticketing under the name starticket , which is used for a wide variety of events such as concerts, festivals, theater, parties and sports events. In 2016, the Zurich-based media group Tamedia took over the majority of the shares in starticket .

Cinema screens

With an area of ​​up to 393.35 m², Cinerent has the world's largest mobile and hydraulically erectable open-air cinema screens. These were developed by Cinerent itself from 1993 onwards.

In Switzerland, Cinerent is the organizer of Allianz Cinema in Basel , Geneva and Zurich , which takes its name from the main sponsor Allianz .

Germany

In Germany, Cinerent is the organizer of the FrankenheimKino in Düsseldorf . This usually takes place between the end of July and the end of August. The first implementation was in 1993. It has a 26.65 meter wide and 14.76 meter high screen and offers around 2,200 seats.

Australia

In Australia, Cinerent is the organizer of the St. George OpenAir Cinema in Sydney and Melbourne . These take place in the summer months of January / February there.

The St. George OpenAir Cinema, which has been running in Sydney since 1998, has a 24.90 meter wide and 13.50 meter high screen and offers 1,880 seats. With 60,795 visitors, in 2007 it was the most popular open-air cinema event organized by Cinerent itself.

The St. George OpenAir Cinema in Melbourne is the most recent event and was held for the first time in 2006. It has a screen 26.65 meters wide and 14.76 meters high and offers around 1,600 seats. In 2007 the event counted 19,000 visitors.
