Alliston [ ˈælɪstən ] is a town in the Canadian province of Ontario . Alliston is about 90 kilometers north-northwest of Toronto . Since incorporation in 1991, Alliston has been the administrative seat of the New Tecumseth parish in Simcoe County . Alliston has about 15,379 inhabitants (2011).

Alliston is divided by Highway 89. Three kilometers west of Alliston is Earl Rowe Provincial Park , one of the largest provincial parks in southern Ontario.

The village was considered a commercial center for potato farmers, who still shape the commercial image of the city; The Alliston Potato Festival is held annually. With 4,500 employees, however, Honda Canada is now the city's most important employer and operates two plants in the south-east of the city.

history

In November 1847 , the first Alliston home was built by William Fletcher and his son. In the summer of 1848 a sawmill and the first industrial establishments were added. A flour mill was built by the Fletcher family in 1853 and Alliston was first mentioned as a village in 1874. In 1875, the local council began serving with Reeve George Fletcher as chairman. The first train reached Alliston in 1878 on the Hamilton and North Western Railway.

In 1891 Alliston was named town and John Steward was elected mayor. Finally there was a fire on May 8, 1891, which destroyed all shops and many apartments over an area of ​​more than 1.2 km². As a result, a waterworks was built in Alliston in the following years.

Frederick Banting , who later received the Nobel Prize and was ennobled by the Queen, was a co-discoverer of insulin and opened the Memorial Library on February 14th. He was born in Alliston in 1891. There is an opportunity to visit his birthplace and the adjoining park in Alliston. Dr. Banting was the head of the Alliston School Board. The town's high school is named Banting Memorial High School in his honor .
