Allschwiler pond

The Allschwiler Weiher (also Allschwilerweiher ) is an artificially created pond in Allschwil ( canton Basel-Landschaft ) directly on the border with the city of Basel and the neighboring municipality of Binningen . It served various purposes over the centuries and is now the starting point for leisure activities in the Allschwil Forest .

history

In 1672, when the Dorenbach emerged from the neighboring forest , the city of Basel acquired a field about three species of Juch from the prince-bishop Allschwil , in order to create a fire-fighting pond . After two years of construction, the reservoir was filled for the first time in 1675. 1794, the pond became a Eisweiher converted and served as such for cooling of beer of Actienbrauerei Basel , and later for ice skating in winter. From 1869 it was used for fish farming , then until 1978 as a rinsing pond for the sewer system. Since then, the pond has existed as an ornamental pond and is home to a large fish population and various water birds ( ducks ).

The municipal shooting range was located near the pond since 1899 . The area, including the former rifle house, was shut down at the end of 2008 and demolished in spring 2013 after a month's squatting .

The construction of the Allschwiler Weiher and the associated construction of an overflow ditch for the Herrengraben Canal in 1677 led to the final diversion of the Dorenbach eastwards to the Birsig ; previously the Dorenbach flowed partially (completely before the construction of the Herrengraben in 1428) in a northeasterly direction via Allschwil directly into the Rhine .
