Alma Erdmann (born July 21, 1872 in Herzberg am Harz , † around 1930 in Hanover ) was a German artist. She specialized in portrait painting and illustrations.

Life

Alma Erdmann completed her studies as one of only a few female students at the Karlsruhe Art Academy in the teaching of Caspar Ritter and Karl Caspar , then at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Hugo Crola and Claus Meyer .

Her first public participation in an art exhibition took place in 1901 as part of the Berlin Academy Exhibition. The one she made for this and one of her most famous oil paintings Black Forest woman was purchased by the National Gallery in Berlin in 1901 . From this oil painting she made other versions of the same model in similar costume, so that there are a total of three versions of the motif.

Together with her teacher Karl Casper , Alma Erdmann took part in a competition run by the Faber company in 1910, for which a painting with pelican colors was to be made.

style

Alma Erdmann is best known for her work with oil paint on canvases. Folkloric portraits dominate her narrow oeuvre.

Influences

Influences from Dutch painting of the 16th and 17th centuries, the Düsseldorf School of Painting and the Leibl Circle are shown in her works.

Her pictures are characterized by contemplative features and detailed realism.
