Alo Põldmäe

Alo Põldmäe (born May 22, 1945 in Tartu ) is an Estonian composer , musicologist and musician.

Life

Alo Põldmäe was born the son of the Estonian composer Rudolf Põldmäe (1908–1988) and the literary scholar Aino Undla-Põldmäe (1910–1992). In 1949, after the Soviet occupation of Estonia , the whole family was deported to Siberia . It was not until 1955 that she was able to return to Estonia in the course of de-Stalinization .

From 1960 Alo Põldmäe received piano lessons from the Estonian pianist Alexandra Sarv and decided to pursue a career as a musician. In 1970 he completed his studies in composition with Heino Eller at the Tallinn State Conservatory .

From 1968 to 1970 he was employed as an oboist with the Estonian State Symphony Orchestra (ERSO). He then worked from 1972 to 1980 as a music editor for the state film company of the Estonian SSR , Tallinnfilm . From 1980 to 1989 Põldmäe was secretary of the Composers 'Union of the Estonian SSR ( Estonian ENSV Heliloojate Liit ) and from 1989 to 1993 deputy chairman of the Composers' Union. Since 1993 he has worked in a leading position at the Estonian Theater and Music Museum in Tallinn . He has also been teaching composition at the Tallinn Music School since 1983. He also appears as a classical and jazz singer.
