Alor Setar (also Alor Star ) is the capital of the Malaysian state of Kedah .
geography
Alor Setar is located in the north of the Malay Peninsula on the Kedah River , a few kilometers inland from its confluence with the Andaman Sea and less than 50 kilometers as the crow flies from the border with Thailand .

116,624 inhabitants live in the urban area (as of 2010). If you add the suburbs, which together with the narrower urban area, cover an area of around 665 km 2 , Alor Setar has a total of 357,176 inhabitants (as of 2010) and is one of the largest cities in Kedah.
