history

The silting up of stagnant waters resulted in a large moor a few thousand years ago in the area of today's Alp Flix . About 600 years ago German-speaking Avers Walser migrated to this patch of earth and cleared the alp to use it as pasture. Around the year 1500 there were around 200 inhabitants. Due to adverse living conditions such as the rampant plague and climate change, the few survivors moved into the valley and fully assimilated with the Rhaeto-Romans . That is why there are only romanized field names .

Today the Alp Flix belongs to the Rhaeto-Romanic community of Surses in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Four farmers still operate mostly according to biological principles. In recent years, some valley residents have also settled permanently on the alp.

The Hotel Piz Platta was built in 1908 , named after Piz Platta ( 3392  m above sea level ), which lies on the other side of the valley and is similar to the Matterhorn .

In the 1960s there were plans to open up the Alp for tourism. A comprehensive infrastructure with 10,000 beds and countless mountain railways was planned, which should have opened up the region as far as the Engadine. The plans ultimately failed due to resistance from nature and homeland protection organizations. Today most of the residents are glad that they were not implemented.

Natural park

The alp has become a symbol of biodiversity . The German magazine Geo and the Swiss nature museums had all animal and plant species scientifically documented for one day. This resulted in the Treasure Island Alp Flix project . The Alp is also part of the Parc Ela nature park , which comprises 21 communities on 250 km² in the Surses district and the Albula valley .
