The Villacher Alpe Alpine Garden is a botanical garden. It extends over 350 meters in length to 12,000 m² along the upper edge of the steep Rote Wand (picture on the right), an imposing landslide as a result of an earthquake in 1348 .

Located on the Dobratsch mountain in the eastern Gailtal Alps, 1500 meters above sea level, the Botanical Garden can be reached on the Villach Alpine Road, which is subject to a toll . From parking lot number 6 on the Alpenstraße, a comfortable 200-meter path leads to your destination.

Following a proposal by the Mayor of Villach , Gottfried Timmerer, in 1961, the garden was founded five years later and opened on July 1, 1973 on the initiative of the Villacher Alpengarten Villacher Alpe Association . The Alpine auricle ( Primula auricula ) was chosen as the landmark . Because there is no spring under the karst limestone cover of the mountain, rainwater has to be collected for the more than 900 plant species.

The garden is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from June to August and is also temporarily accessible in May, September and October.
