Alphonse Rivier

Alphonse Pierre Octave Rivier (born November 9, 1835 in Lausanne , † July 21, 1898 in Brussels ) was a Swiss lawyer and legal historian .

He studied in Berlin , where he obtained a doctorate in law in 1858 , and then in Lausanne and Paris . In 1862 he completed his habilitation at the University of Berlin as a private lecturer, and in 1863 he was appointed professor at the University of Bern . Four years later he moved to the Free University of Brussels , where from 1886 he also held the office of Swiss Consul General for Belgium . His works dealt primarily with Roman law and international law .

From 1878 to 1885 Rivier published six volumes of the yearbook of the Institut de Droit international (Institute for International Law), of which he was Secretary General from 1878 to 1887. In the same years he was editor-in-chief of the Revue de droit international . He also made numerous contributions to legal journals and compilations. His successor at the University of Brussels was Ernest Nys after his death .
