Ernest Nys

Ernest Nys (born March  27, 1851 in Kortrijk ; †  September 4, 1920 in Brussels ) was a Belgian lawyer who worked as a professor of international law at the University of Brussels . He also served as a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration .

Life

Ernest Nys was born in Kortrijk in 1851 and studied law at the universities of Ghent , Heidelberg , Leipzig and Berlin . He then worked as a lawyer in Antwerp and Brussels . In 1898 he succeeded Alphonse Rivier as professor of international law at the University of Brussels , where he served as dean from 1898 to 1900 . In 1913 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy . He was also a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague . He died in Brussels in 1920.

Act

Ernest Nys was particularly interested in the historical development of international law and translated works by the English legal scholars James Lorimer and John Westlake , among others . He is considered the first historian of international law, which increasingly established itself as an independent legal discipline during his lifetime. In addition, he was co-editor of the Revue de Droit International et de Legislation Comparée (journal for international law and comparative law), the first academic journal for international law , which was co-founded by his compatriot Gustave Rolin-Jaequemyns in 1868 .

Awards

Ernest Nys belonged to the Institut de Droit international from 1892 and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his commitment to international arbitration in all years from 1906 to 1916 and in 1919 . The universities of Oxford , Edinburgh and Glasgow awarded him honorary doctorates . He was made an honorary member of the American Society for International Law in 1911.
