When the earth broke up (Original title: The Day the Earth Moved ) is an American television film from 1974. It was directed by Robert Michael Lewis.

action

The pilots Steve Barker and Harley Copeland are supposed to photograph the California desert for surveying purposes. In doing so, by chance they discover a method that can be used to predict earthquakes. When they use this new method on their next flight over the desert, the two pilots discover that the small town of Bates is in an area where a major earthquake can occur at any time.

The pilots immediately inform those responsible in the city. But because both the officials and the residents of the city are not taking their warnings seriously, Barker and Copeland decide to act themselves: they fly to Bates in a stolen plane, which they use to bring the inhabitants of the desert city to safety. When, after long discussions, Barker and Copeland finally succeed in convincing the citizens of the city of the impending danger, the earth suddenly shakes. While the small desert town is completely destroyed, the two pilots and residents of Bates manage to escape by plane at the last moment.
