Alt-Rhoden is a deserted , medieval settlement near the former city of Rhoden , today a district of Diemelstadt (Hesse), with preserved Romanesque church ruins.

history

The first traces of settlement can be found around the year 800. At that time there was a Carolingian court in the settlement . The name is not clear. The names Radi , Rothum , Rothen and Roden appear. In 1020 , Count Dodiko, who resided in the Wartburg near Warburg , handed over the Corvey estate to Bishop Meinwerk and the Paderborn Monastery . In the first decades of the 13th century, the residents of Old Rhodes left the settlement and settled near Rhoden Castle, as it offered better protection.

Church ruin

The church was built around 1000 and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Apostle Bartholomew . Even after leaving the settlement, it was used as a burial church for the surrounding villages until 1817. Numerous tombstones still bear witness to this today. In 1792 the original cross shape of the complex was uncovered during excavations. In 1856 the roof of the nave of the church collapsed, turning it into ruins. The gable wall was demolished from 1858 to 1860. Of particular importance is a tympanum that was built in the middle of the 12th century and depicts the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
