Alta Mesa AVA (recognized since 2006) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California and is part of the supraregional Lodi AVA . The area is within the administrative division of Sacramento County . The Spanish name Alta Mesa (translated high table ) alludes to the higher position of a plateau compared to the surrounding area.

Geography and climate

The clayey soil is heavily interspersed with gravel and forces the vines to develop deep roots. The area is known for extremely low rainfall and, according to the Sloughhouse AVA appellation, is the warmest within the American Viticultural Area Lodi.

history

The designation of origin Alta Mesa AVA was recognized by the state on July 17, 2006 by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau .

Wineries

There is currently no winery in the area that markets wines under the Alta Mesa appellation. It is currently the responsibility of the higher-level Lodi AVA wine-growing companies to use the designation of origin by buying up grape material and cultivating it separately. The companies Barreto Cellars and Twisted Oak Winery are examples.
