Lodi AVA
Lodi AVA (recognized since 1986) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California and is part of the national appellation California. The total recognized area is 223,000 hectares (551,500 acres) of which about 36,000 hectares are actually planted. The area is located in the northern part of the San Joaquin Valley along the San Francisco Bay , within the administrative area of Sacramento County . It is named after the city of Lodi .
history
Viticulture has been known in the Lodi area since the middle of the 19th century. Settlers found wild vines in particular on the banks of the Calaveras River , a tributary of the San Joaquin River . The Calaveras River was sometimes called Wine Creek by the settlers .
Geography and climate
Lodi has a climate comparable to that of the European Mediterranean with warm summers but with a marked difference between day and night temperatures. Typical are the large pebbles mixed with sandy loam, which in places completely litter the ground and thus give a picture similar to that in Châteauneuf-du-Pape . In order to take into account the concept of terroir , the wine-growing area was divided into sub-zones. In the Alta Mesa AVA , Borden Ranch AVA , Clements Hills AVA , Cosumnes River AVA , Jahant AVA , Mokelumne River AVA , Sloughhouse AVA zones , the soil types and microclimate are more homogeneous than would be possible in a large area.
Viticulture
Despite the impressively long list of grape varieties available, the area is best known for its old Zinfandel plantations. In addition, the most important grape varieties are Merlot , Chardonnay , Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc .
