Mokelumne River AVA is a wine-growing region in the US state of California that has been recognized since July 17, 2006 . The area extends to the administrative area of San Joaquin County . The protected designation of origin is a sub-zone of the superior Lodi AVA and is located in the southwest of this region. The town of Lodi and the communities of Woodbridge and Acampo are in the defined zone of the wine-growing region. The American Viticultural Area was named after the Mokelumne River , which rises in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and flows into the San Joaquin River . The wine-growing region is drained by the Mokelumne River and its tributary, the Cosumnes River . The soil consists of sandy and loamy alluvial land . Sufficient rainfall and the ability of the soil to store moisture enable viticulture here without irrigation .
