Altan is an Irish folk music group from Ireland .
Band history
During the summer vacation, the flautist Frankie Kennedy met the singer and violinist Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, whom he finally married in 1981. Altan was founded together with other musicians. In 1983 they released their first album Ceol Aduaidh . Kennedy died in 1994. As a result, the sound of the band was more influenced by Dermot Byrne's accordion. In 1999 Mairéad married Ní Mhaonaigh and Byrne.
Musically, the style of the group is very traditional, where they interpret the music of their home in County Donegal at high speed. The very light voice of Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and the flattering voice of Dáithí Sproules are defining features.
