Königsberg, Green Bridge with Old Stock Exchange (1850)

The old stock exchange at the Green Gate in Kneiphof was used by the merchants of the three cities of Altstadt (Königsberg) , Löbenicht and Kneiphof and existed from 1624 to 1875. In 1875 the new stock exchange was built in the historicist style at the front suburb ; in the course of the new building, the old stock exchange was demolished.

description

The old stock exchange was located at the Green Gate , the “most magnificent gate” in Königsberg. It formed the southern entrance to the Kneipfhöfischen Langgasse. Today the high bridge of Leninsky Prospect (Kaliningrad) runs there . According to Caspar Stein's description, the exchange was flanked by the post office. The paintings show the old stock exchange with the two bell towers of the Königsberg district of Kneiphof, the bell tower of the Green Gate and the bell tower of the Kneiphöfischen cathedral.

Renaissance building (1624-1800)

The old stock exchange was built in 1624 on piles above the Pregel river in the style of Venetian buildings east of the Green Bridge at Kneiphof. The building was provided with “columns that were connected to one another by a round arch architecture, and two roofs parallel to Langgasse, which showed a baroque architecture on their gables”. In 1624 the statues of Mercury and Neptune with the coat of arms of the Kneiphof were placed on the facade.

Sirens and sea monsters were depicted on the ceiling of the exchange . This demonstrated the naval supremacy of the Königsberg Navy. In addition, 60 emblems were depicted in figures and paintings with rhymes. The paintings were created by the Dutch painter Greger Singknecht . Samuel Fuchs wrote the rhymes . The painting of the last motto represented the Last Judgment . Singknecht's paintings were renewed in 1792 by Johann Friedrich Bayer . Lilienthal said in 1726 that the old stock exchange “surpassed all stock exchanges in Europe because of its airy situation”.

Classicist building (1800–1875)

On September 4, 1800, a new building in the classicism style was built on the same site . The building showed coupled Ionic columns in the western front . The dome roof was built according to the Delorme system based on designs by Obermühlen inspector Dittrich. On the long sides there were large, rectangular windows and small square ones above. In the south-facing gable, the coats of arms of the three cities Altstadt, Kneiphof and Löben could not be seen. A colored lithograph by Friedrich Heinrich Bils shows the harbor below the Green Bridge with the Green Gate and the Old Stock Exchange. The building was demolished in 1875.

“The large hall, which took up almost the entire building, was elliptical in shape. The four corners of the house were cut off by semicircular walls, some of which were intended as small cabinets for the realtors, and some of which took up stairs to the balconies that were built up on the narrow sides of the hall. The entrances were from both gable sides, from the Köttelbrücke one could go through an attached large flight of stairs over the corridor at the Bollwerke directly into the merchant's resource building, which is now still under the name Börsenhalle at the old location.
