Refuge old bobsleigh run

The old bobsled run is a hiking trail north of the town of Schierke in the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt, which is part of the town of Wernigerode . In the past, the path was part of a bobsleigh run .

location

The path leads from the meeting of Edelmannshäuweg and Neuer Weg to the north, crosses the Brockenbahn via an unbarred level crossing and meets the Bahnparallelweg , which leads from Schierke station to Eckerloch . As an extension to the north, a hiking trail then leads to Brockenstrasse , which leads to the summit of the Brocken . In the area of the intersection with the Bahnparallelweg there is now a refuge with a notice board referring to the history of the old bobsleigh run.

history

The bobsled run was built in 1907. Essentially, it was a natural track. Between 1908 and 1958 competitions, including German and Harz Championships, took place on this bobsleigh run with interruptions. Originally the bobsled run was about two kilometers long. The starting point was the so-called Brocken bed . The bobsleigh run already passed the Brocken run when it was set up. However, there were initially no conflicts of use, as the Brocken Railway did not run in winter. In the mid-1930s, the bobsleigh run was then shortened to 1,450 meters. The starting point was Brockenstrasse at an altitude of 821 meters above sea level , the finish line was 141 meters lower at an altitude of 680 meters, near Schierke at the grandmother toboggan run junction . The railway now had an average gradient of 9.92%. Average speeds of 70 km / h and top speeds of more than 100 km / h were achieved on the system. It was one of the fastest railways of its time. Initially, the route was ridden with five-man bobs , then with two- man and four-man bobs . Also Skeleton - and luge sled -race were driven.

In the 1950s the bobsleigh run was then given up. To the north of the intersection of the parallel path there are still remains of the wall, which belonged to the bobsleigh run, a little off the path.
