The Old Tannery is under monument protection standing cultural monument in Bensheim on the mountain road .

History

The Bensheim red tanner Philipp Franz Müller had the building built in 1873. The building to the east of St. George's Church is located directly on the Lauter and until 1915 served as a tannery and warehouse for the bark required for red tanning (tanning with vegetable matter) . It was then sold to the grand ducal winegrowing domain and passed to the state wineries after the end of the First World War . Until the beginning of the 1990s, the building served as a wine and equipment store, initially also as an apartment. In 1995 the building was completely renovated by the city of Bensheim.

present

The upper rooms of the old tannery have been used for cultural purposes (Varieté Pegasus) since 1996. A restaurant is located in the basement.

Structure and meaning

The old tannery was built with irregular granite stones . The corners and edges are made of machined sandstone blocks. The roof of the building is made up of two high, parallel, gable roof structures. The central building has an arched entrance. The window openings were framed with sandstone walls. As an impressive building of the traditional red tanning trade in Bensheim, which is now extinct, the old tannery has a special economic and historical significance.
