The church is one of the so-called Njudungskirchen built in the 12th century in Romanesque style . It stands on the south bank of Lake Vallsjön (Nässjö) . To the southeast of the actual church building is a wooden bell tower. Since the church has no heating facility, it is only used for church purposes in summer.

Noteworthy is the picture in the tympanum above the door to the choir, which is reminiscent of the style of Lund Cathedral and depicts the struggle between good and evil. A picture stone from the 13th century that represents the tree of life in the nave is particularly old. The pulpit dates from the end of the 17th century, the pews were built in 1700. The ceiling is adorned with late baroque ceiling paintings from the middle of the 18th century . The church organ is a Magnusson organ and dates from the middle of the 19th century. It is said to be the best preserved church organ in the Njudung region.

At the end of the 19th century, not far from Sävsjö , a new church was built with the church of Vallsjö and the use of the old church of Vallsjö was given up. From 1951 the use was resumed.
