The Alte Landwehr is a building in Darmstadt .

History and description

The so-called "Old Landwehr" dates from the 14th century. It was laid out under the reign of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen . The "Alte Landwehr" is part of a large, approximately 20-kilometer-long Landwehr ditch that crossed the northern Starkenburg from Groß-Gerau to Darmstadt and enclosed the Darmstadt district . The medieval protection system follows the current boundary between the Scheftheimer meadows and the "Forsthaus Steinacker".

The counts of Katzenelnbogen wanted to use the fortification to prevent the theft of wood and wild animals in their area. In addition, the "Old Landwehr" also served the counts as a game protection fence and as a customs barrier . At the crossings in the "Alte Landwehr" there were customs stations where the traders were charged with customs duties on their goods.

Monument protection

The "Alte Landwehr" runs in sections along the Darmstadt boundary. In 1987, the "Hessian Forestry Office" in Darmstadt restored part of the system with wall and ditch true to the original. The rehabilitated section of the “Alten Landwehr” lies at the intersection “Bornschneise” and “Steinsnickelweg” in the Darmstadt Ostwald. The "Old Landwehr" is from local historical reasons under monument protection .
