Old post

The Alte Post is a listed building in Oberursel .

history

In Oberursel, the post was initially housed in the house of the respective post holder . In 1895 the first post office was rented at Oberhöchstädter Straße 10. With a contract dated February 20, 1911 between the city of Oberursel and the Reichs-Post- und Telegraphenverwaltung it was agreed that the city should set up its own post office and that the Oberpostdirektion Frankfurt am Main would rent it.

The foundation stone was laid on July 25, 1911. The construction plans came from the Frankfurt post office building officer Höfig, the construction management was carried out by the Oberursel architect Carl Runkwitz . Earthwork, bricklaying and carpentry work was carried out by the Oberursel company JJ Meister, the roofing work by the Pforzheim company Meschede. The new imperial post office in Oberhöchstädter Strasse was moved into the following year.

When it opened, the house was found to be too small. The city could have built bigger too, but the post office was not prepared to pay more than 4,000 marks in rent. In 1957 the Deutsche Bundespost acquired the building from the city. From 1961 the post office was moved to a barrack on Ebertstrasse and the old post office was used for telecommunication purposes. In 1964 the post office opened at Berliner Straße 89, which is still a post office today.

The Alte Post has been used as a training building by the adult education center since 1987 .
