The Alte Schanze is a Slavic rampart east of Vorwerk , a district of the town of Demmin in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .
The ground monument is about one kilometer east of Vorwerk, isolated in a field on the Tollensee lowlands . The once oval rampart was half destroyed by agriculture. Possibly the earth was taken from him in order to cultivate the nearby damp meadows. Ceramic finds indicate that the complex was built in the Old Slavonic period. Some researchers assume that this castle could be the site of the Wilzen king Dragowit mentioned in writing , who was besieged and subjugated here by Charlemagne in 789 . Since 1697 the wall rest was referred to as the "Großer Borgwall", on later maps as the "Alte Schanze". Today there are hundreds of reading stones on the wooded wall remnants , which were deposited here by agriculture.
