The Old Synagogue in Ternopil , a Ukrainian city in the oblast of the same name , was built after 1623 and destroyed in World War II.

history

In 1623 the Jews of Ternopils were allowed to build a synagogue. Presumably this was built as a military synagogue on the site of a wooden synagogue that was destroyed by fire. The exact date of construction is not known, but it already existed during the Khmelnytskyi Uprising from 1648. At that time it was part of the city's fortifications.

From 1665 to 1671 it was fundamentally rebuilt. Further renovations took place in 1772 and on a larger scale in the 19th century.

After the German invasion of the Soviet Union , it was set on fire in July 1941. When Ternopils was retaken by the Red Army in 1944, it was finally destroyed by bombing.

architecture

The interior of the rectangular main hall was 15.75 × 12.00 m. In the west there was a vestibule and on the northeast side the prayer room for the women. It is not clear whether these additions were built when the synagogue was built or are from later. They were one-story and thus lower than the main hall. This itself was considerably lower than the surrounding parts of the building and had a barrel vault . An attic covered the roof. On the side walls there were (presumably) three pointed arch windows at a greater height.

In the later fundamental renovations, the vestibule and the women's prayer room were raised by one floor and provided with pointed arched windows. The attic was also made considerably higher. The whole building was given a rustic look from the outside .

The Torah shrine had a stone frame in the Baroque style .

The bima was made of cast iron like an arbor with decorative elements
