The Old University of Salzburg is located on Universitätsplatz in the city of Salzburg . The building is a listed building .

history

In 1618, a building for a grammar school was built on behalf of Archbishop Markus Sittikus in the area of ​​the former St. Petrische Frauengarten . At the same time the construction of the chapel of St. Charles Borromeo ( Sacellum ) started. In 1620 it was converted into a Benedictine university. With the planning of 1627 by the architect Santino Solari , the expansion into a university building with the auditorium and the north wing followed from 1630. The south wing was built from 1652 to 1655.

After the Salzburg University was closed at the beginning of the 19th century, the Academic Gymnasium was housed in the buildings until 1975 . Today the wings mainly house two university facilities: the Catholic Theological Faculty in the wing on the side facing Universitätsplatz and the Salzburg University Library on the side facing Hofstallgasse.
