The Altenburg , also called Weiler Castle, Weilerburg, Altenberg , is the ruin of a spur castle at 690 m above sea level. NN in the Altenburg part of the market hamlet of Simmerberg in the Lindau district in Bavaria .
history
The castle was built in the 13th century by Eberhard von Weiler, then eponymous for "Weilerburg", and was mentioned in the middle of the 13th century in the possession of the Lords of Weiler , who were presumably servants of the abbot of St. Gallen .
The daughters of Hans Wilhelm von Weiler († 1557), the last male member of the lords of Weiler zur Altenburg, sold the Altenburg estate and castle to the House of Habsburg in 1569 . The buyer was Archduke Ferdinand II , the brother of Emperor Maximilian II. From then on, Altenburg served as the office of the Austrian officials of the Altenburg-Kellhöf court. In 1784 the castle was sold for demolition and in 1826 stones from the ruins were still used for the church tower in Scheidegg. From the former castle complex only remains of rubble stone masonry are preserved.
