history

Memorial stone on the cemetery grounds

In the middle of the 17th century there was a small Jewish community in Münden . A cemetery was laid out before 1673. Because of repeated desecrations, permission was given in 1678 to enclose it with a fence. By the end of the 19th century, 291 burials had been carried out - this meant that the cemetery was largely occupied and a replacement plot of land had to be found. It was not until 1928 that the Jewish community was able to acquire suitable land about 2 km from the city center for a new cemetery.

In 1938 the old cemetery was desecrated and the 1000 m² area was transferred to the company on the neighboring property. “Some of the tombstones were given to a local stonemason for reuse, and some remained on the property. There they ended up underground when the site was leveled during the Nazi era . "

The entire former cemetery area was converted into a memorial after the Second World War .
