New Jewish Cemetery (Bremke)

The New Jewish Cemetery Bremke is a Jewish cemetery near Bremke in the municipality of Gleichen ( Göttingen district , Lower Saxony ).

The cemetery is located northeast of the village on the lower southern slope of the Eschenberg near the road to Sennickerode ("Haspel").

history

After the old cemetery within the village on Heiligenstädter Strasse was fully occupied, the new cemetery at Eschenberg was laid out in 1844. In the middle of the 19th century, 17 percent of Bremke's residents were Jewish. The Bremk synagogue was burned down on November 10, 1938. The cemetery property was transferred to private ownership in 1944 and used for agriculture, the tombstones were removed and partially smashed. Today the site has been restored and 44 preserved tombstones have been placed there. The Jewish cemetery is a listed building .
