geography

View of Bremke from the southeast

Bremke is a street village on the German Fairy Tale Route about 9 kilometers southeast of Göttingen . The former inner German border and today's Lower Saxony- Thuringia border ran immediately to the south . The place on the edge of the Reinhausen Forest and in the narrow valley of the Wendebach is characterized by steep, open red sandstone cliffs . The highest elevations in the area are the Eschenberg (407.8 m) and Die Gleichen (430 m) north of the village.

The estates and settlements of Appenrode , Elbickerode , Sennickerode and Vogelsang also belong to the district of Bremke . In terms of traffic, the place is connected via the state roads L 568 and L567 .

history

The first documentary mention comes from a document dated to the year 1022, which was forged at the beginning of the 12th century and indicates Henry II as the issuer. The place name is given there as Bredenbiche . Earlier mentions of a place Bredanbiki and Bredanbeke in the Corveyer traditions can also refer to Bremke in the Holzminden district. In the 19th century, one half of Bremke belonged to the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg , while the other half was under the rule of the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel . The peculiarity that resulted from this was that one house was located on the territory of Hanover and another on the territory of Hesse.

On January 1, 1973 Bremke was incorporated into the new municipality of Gleichen.

coat of arms

Bremke coat of arms
Blazon : "Divided by gold (yellow) and red with mixed-up tinctures, pick and ax crossed diagonally above, two ears of corn crossed diagonally below."
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms designed by Otto Rössler von Wildenhain was approved by the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior on July 8, 1949. The pick and ax stand for the traditional stone-carving and carpentry trade in the municipality, the ears of corn for agriculture.

etymology

The first mentions of the place name show that it can be traced back to a construction in the dative case: (tom) brēden beke (at the broad stream). The ending -beke ( -bach ) was contracted to Bremke with the determiner in the 16th century . It is possible to refer to the Wendebach , which is still approached by a brook coming from the south in Bremke and whose valley narrows significantly immediately west of the village when it flows through the Reinhausen Forest.

Religions

The Protestants in Bremke belong to the ev.-luth. Parish of St. Matthias in Bremke.

In Bremke there was a Jewish synagogue community alongside the Protestant majority . There was a Jewish cemetery since the 18th century, a synagogue was built in the village in 1828 and a Jewish elementary school was set up in 1838 . In the middle of the 19th century, 17 percent of the population were Jewish, the synagogue community also included the Jewish residents from Gelliehausen, Reinhausen and Wöllmarshausen, at least for a short time. At the beginning of 1933 there were 26 Jewish residents in Bremke, among them the painter Hermann Hirsch . The last Jews had to leave the village at the end of 1939. The Bremen synagogue was destroyed by the November pogroms in 1938 .

Culture and sights

For many years, fairy tale games have been performed regularly on Sundays on the Waldbühne, which has around 1000 seats from May to September .

Several clubs shape life in the village: the TSV 1904 Bremke-Ischenrode eV, Schützenverein Altengleich Bremke, the Bremke volunteer fire brigade , and the Bremke riding club

Buildings

Ev.-luth. St. Matthias Church
  • The Protestant Church of St. Matthias is essentially a medieval building made of red sandstone. Remains of clogged pointed arch windows can still be seen in the irregular masonry. Above the door is the year “1772”, which apparently indicates a later construction project. The unique external appearance is determined by the squat-looking tower substructure in the west, which is slightly wider than the nave and supports an octagonal slate-hung tower over a mansard roof hunched to the east . Inside there is an altar from around 1770.
  • The Gasthaus Jütte , also called “Mutter Jütte”, is a traditional inn that has existed since 1883.
  • Half-timbered houses characterize the place, which is considered one of the most beautiful villages in the Göttingen district and was awarded in the competition " Our village should be more beautiful "
  • the Jewish cemetery on Eschenberg
