Groß Lengden is the northernmost part of the municipality of Gleichen in the district of Göttingen and has 918 inhabitants (as of May 4, 2015).

location

Groß Lengden is located on the south-eastern slope of the Göttingen Forest , which slopes steeply to the Bramke valley. Together with Sattenhausen , which is only a little further south, it is the northernmost district of the municipality. The district of Klein Lengden joins to the southwest ; the south-east lying settlement Niedeck with forester's house and domain belongs to the district of Groß Lengden. In the north, larger parts of the Göttingen Forest lie in the Groß Lengden district, which extends to the Kerstlingeröder field and up to 500 meters to the Mackenröder peak . To the north of the village rises the horse crib, further north is the highest point with the 425 meter high Staneberg. East of the village on the other side of the Bramke is the 385 meter high Kronenberg with a castle ruin, to the north of it the Hengstberg belongs to the district. The 315.5 meter high Kahlberg rises southeast of Groß Lengden in the Reinhausen Forest .

Place name

history

As is the case with most places in the region, the time when the town was founded is unknown. The first written mention of a place Lengithi or Lengidi is ascribed to the year 822 and can be found in the Codex Eberhardi of the Fulda Monastery . According to legend, white horses were once sacrificed on the Hengstberg. First references to two places with the name Lengden can be found in a document attributed to the year 1022.

As part of the municipal reform, Groß Lengden became a part of the newly formed municipality of Gleichen on January 1, 1973.

Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms designed by Otto Rössler von Wildenhain was approved by the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior on September 28, 1948. It refers to the historical control room as well as the Hengstberg (the horse (stallion) serves as a talking symbol here ) not far from the village.
