Benniehausen is a district of the municipality of Gleichen in the district of Göttingen with 349 inhabitants (as of May 4, 2015). The Wittmarshof district belongs to Benniehausen.
history
The first written mention of Benniehausen that has survived is in a document from the Bursfelde Monastery from 1201. The place name is given there as "Bennighusen". A document printed in the Mainz document book, which is issued for the year 1123 and mentions the place as “Benningehusen”, is a forgery from the 13th century. The former existence of an original document from the 12th century with a mention of the place is not proven by the forgery, but also not excluded, because original documents were sometimes used as the basis for modified forgeries.
In the course of the municipal reform, Benniehausen became a district of the newly formed municipality Gleichen on January 1, 1973.

coat of arms
Blazon : "In green a silver (white) wave bar, accompanied by three 2: 1 set golden (yellow) mill irons." | |
Reasons for the coat of arms: The coat of arms designed by Heinz Reise was approved by the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior on January 24, 1950. The mill irons stand for the three former water mills (Lockemannsche, Hessische Mühle in Wittmarshof and Hessenmühle, whose building is still preserved today.) In the place known as Mühlendorf, the wavy bar symbolizes the garden where the mills were located. At the same time the coat of arms reminds of the coat of arms of the Lockemann family, who operated all three mills; It showed three golden mill irons in front of three silver wavy bars in the red shield. |

Wittmarshof Chapel
The evangelical reformed chapel in Wittmarshof was built at the beginning of the 17th century, which is also borne out by the fact that in 1575 the noble family of those at Bodenhausen moved their residence from Neuengleichen to Wittmarshof. The half-timbered gable front and the roof turret date from the early 19th century, the year 1819 is given on the weather vane of the turret. The bell dates from 1696. For centuries, the chapel was the church of the Hessian office of Wittmarshof and was also looked after by the parish of Sattenhausen until the First World War . Since the congregation declined due to the war, from 1922 pastor Bunnenberg from Gelliehausen only carried out services every 4 weeks. In the immediate vicinity of the chapel stood until 1870, the old home of the Hessian bailiff, later the steward of the Vorwerk Wittmarshof. It contained several prison cells with iron-studded doors on the first floor.
