Old Market (Hildesheim)

The old market was the original economic center of the old town and next to the old village one of the nucleus of today's city of Hildesheim .

On the old east-west trade route from the Rhine to the Elbe , a wik , i.e. a fenced-in resting place for traveling merchants, was built on the flood-free bank of the Innerste between the cathedral and Michaelis hills from the 8th century . Long-distance trade was possibly the reason why Ludwig the Pious moved the bishopric from Elze to the cathedral hill to the south in 815 and thus founded the diocese of Hildesheim .

Around 1140 the market in the old town of Hildesheim moved westwards to Andreasplatz and from there from around 1250 on to today's marketplace .

The street name Alter Markt has been attested to since 1146. Today's street begins at Kardinal-Bertram-Straße and ends at Magdalenenkirche . It is now a quiet side street, while through traffic flows over the Pfaffenstieg , which runs parallel to the south . The easternmost part, i.e. the passage to Kardinal-Bertram-Straße at the Kaiserhaus , was originally part of the adjoining Eckemekerstraße to the east and was only added to the Old Market in 1998 for purely practical reasons .

The name Alter Markt was also given to a secondary school on the street run by the city of Hildesheim; after its closure, the rooms have been used by the Alter Markt primary school since 2015 . A renaissance bay window was included in the school building.

In front of the school building there is a replica of the lower part of an earlier wheel cross from the 15th century, the Schauteufelskreuz , donated by the landscape of the former Principality of Hildesheim .
