The Alte Wall is a street in the old part of Hamburg . It runs from Rathausmarkt to Rödingsmarkt .

The Alte Wall was originally part of the former Hamburg fortifications and was built from 1430. After the construction of the upstream New Wall around 1560, the Old Wall became superfluous. After the demolition of this defense structure, however, the old wall was retained as the name of the street in the same place. The street was also called "Dreckwall", probably after the rubbish that was dumped there before the New Wall was built.

When Sephardic Jews settled in Hamburg from 1580 , many settled on the Alter Wall. The first Jewish prayer room of the Sephardic community Newe Schalom was built in 1612 at Alten Wall 48/49. The name prayer room results from the fact that the Hamburg Jews were not allowed to use synagogues at that time. The hall was used by the Sephardi until 1835 and then sold to the German-Israelite community, which had been building there since 1835. In the 18th century, the premises of the Altona and Wandsbeker parishes in Hamburg's old town were also located on the Alten Wall .

Many buildings were destroyed in the fire in 1842 . Heinrich Heine complains:

And the dirt wall, where has the dirt wall gone?
I can look for it in vain!
Where is the pavilion where I am
Eaten some cake?

Heine also mentions the "dirt wall" in connection with good food elsewhere.

The building of the former Reichsbank headquarters, which was built between 1914 and 1919 and was used in parts by the Bucerius Kunst Forum (Rathausmarkt 2 entrance created for this purpose ), is located directly on Rathausmarkt (Alter Wall 2). The Bucerius Kunst Forum has been located at Alter Wall 12 since June 2019. The Alter Wall 10 office buildings were built in 1909–1910 by Johann Emil Schaudt with Walther Puritz and Alter Wall 12 between 1908–1909 by Johann Emil Schaudt with Emil Janda for the North German Insurance Company . Alter Wall 20–22, the former bank building for the Vereinsbank in Hamburg was built by Haller & Geißler in 1900–1902 and by Elingius & Schramm in 1947–1952. The Kontorhaus Alter Wall 32 1894–1895 was converted into a bank building in 1928. The stock exchange is located at Adolphsplatz 1 / Alter Wall 11 .

The Alter Wall 2, 8–12, 20, 22, 32, Rathausmarkt 2 ensemble has been a listed building since May 1, 2013 , the Alter Wall 2 building since September 7, 1982, and the stock exchange since February 16, 1942.
