The old Hechingen Castle , also known as the Prinzessinnenpalais , is a former office building in Hechingen in the Zollernalb district, built in the early 18th century . It is located on Schloßplatz opposite the New Palace , the former residence of the Princes of Hohenzollern-Hechingen .

history

From excavation findings in the basement of the current building it can be assumed that there was already a previous building that could have been part of a castle, as it was determined, for example, that the eastern outer wall of the building is unusually strong for a chancellery building. In 1704 and 1705, Prince Friedrich Wilhelm von Hohenzollern-Hechingen built the current building using the old walls. The building was used as the principality's office in the following years until 1775, but renovation work had to be carried out on the building as early as 1733. In 1775, the building was used as a grammar school for a short time under Prince Josef Friedrich Wilhelm , but this was closed again in 1797 and the castle was used as accommodation for some members of the princely family, which is why the name “Prinzessinnenpalais” prevailed. After the partial collapse of the Renaissance castle, the previous residence of the Princely House, that building had to be demolished in 1812 and the New Castle built. In the transitional phase between 1812 and the completion of the New Palace in 1819, the Prinzessinnenbau served as a princely residence, which led to its current name. Even after that, the castle remained the winter residence of Prince Friedrich . In 1850 the principality became part of the Hohenzollern Lands and the old castle housed the telegraph office. In 1874 the castle came into private ownership, in 1937 the municipality of Hechingen bought back the old castle and used it as the seat of the town hall until 1960. From 1960 a local history museum and the city library were housed in the castle. After extensive renovation between 2002 and 2005, the collection of the Hohenzollern State Museum can now be viewed there .
