The Alte Spittel was built in the 16th century in Visp , in the Swiss canton of Valais . Initially used as a residential building, the building served as a hospital for poor travelers from 1751 to 1965 .

It is classified as a category B object of the Swiss monument protection and is listed under KGS-No .: 7183 on the list of the Hague Conventions for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict .

history

According to the inscription on the first floor, the house was built in 1584 by Governor Johann In-Albon and expanded in 1601. In 1569, Johann In-Albon acquired the building site from the citizens of the city , where there was once a saw, mill and Pfisterei .

In the 17th century, Theodul Lambien created the basis for a foundation by determining in a will a house with associated goods for free accommodation of needy travelers. This property, not the Spittel mentioned in the article, was sold and its goods for 1760 pounds, with the proceeds going to the poor.

Governor Franz Joseph Burgener , in agreement with Bishop Johann Joseph Blatter and Governor Joseph Zurkirchen, revived the old foundation and in 1751 bought the house of castlan Johann Bartholomäus Sterren, who died in 1721 . The house was subsequently converted into a hospital to accommodate poor travelers and pilgrims . For this purpose it remained open until 1965.

In 1970, the association insieme Oberwallis opened a small boarding school for people with disabilities in the Alter Spittel . In 1989 a facade renovation was carried out.

From 1990 to 1997, the Spillchischta daycare center was located within the walls.

Location and structure

The old Spittel is in a depression west of the blue stone . On the rising hill in the south of the building is the St. Martiniplatz with the St. Martinikirche and the Burgenerhaus . The way to St. Martiniplatz east of the building is Spittelgasse.

The elongated, three-story building has a hipped roof on the upper mezzanine floor . On the north side, a round arch portal made of tuff forms the entrance, above it a machicolation bay window with keyhole notches . There are two toilet towers on either side of the long western front ; one polygonal , the other rectangular.

today

The Visp youth work center and youth culture center are currently located on the upper floor with a gallery and mezzanine . The Visp handball club KTV Visp operates its clubhouse in the basement . On the middle floor, with the entrance in Spittelgasse, are the premises of the Wallis Migration Forum , the Association for Refugee Aid Upper Valais.
