Johann Joseph Blatter (born March 23 (or March 17) 1684 in Visp , † January 19, 1752 in Sion ) was a Swiss clergyman and Prince-Bishop of Sitten .

Life

Johann Joseph (third first name is Anton or Arnold) was born as the son of the later governor of the Valais, Arnold Blatter. After visiting the Jesuit College of Brig he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Vienna . He was ordained a priest in 1708 and was pastor in Sierre until 1711 . In 1711 he became canon in Sion, where he also worked as a pastor from 1719. On 18 May 1734 he was elected Bishop of Sion and received on November 21 the same year from Lausanne Bishop Claude-Antoine Duding the episcopal ordination .

Blatter founded the first seminary of the diocese of Sion in the former monastery of Gerunden. During his term of office, the trial of the provost on the Great St. Bernhard also fell .
