history

The lords of Altheim were a lower noble family , first mentioned in 1129. They were originally ministerials of the Counts of Dillingen and from them and the Counts of Oettingen almost all of the property in Donaualtheim was in fief . They sat at the castle in Donaualtheim, on the spot where the church of St. Vitus was built in the 17th century . Remains of the old castle can be traced in the substructure of the church tower. Of the new castle, located northeast of the church, only a castle stables are evidence .

The Lords of Altheim branched out into several lines and founded new seats at Haggenberg Castle, northeast of Donaualtheim, and on the Goldberg near Lutzingen . In the 14th century, the Mörslingen rulership , today a district of Finningen , belonged to the family branch on the Goldberg . Another line can be traced in the 14th century in the Landshut area and died out in 1418/19. From 1530 an Altheim line was in the service of the bishops of Freising .
