Opuntia pailana is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet pailana indicates the site in the Sierra de la Paila in the state of Coahuila / Mexico.
description
Opuntia pailana grows shrubby with several upright branches and reaches heights of up to 1 meter. The almost circular to obovate, initially blue-green shoot sections later turn yellowish green. They are 10 to 14 inches long and up to 9 inches wide. The dark areoles are up to 2 centimeters apart and have yellowish gray glochids that are mixed with long white hair . The first usually three, later six to eight thorns are initially whitish and sometimes banded across. Later they get dark. The thorns are 2 to 3 inches long.
Nothing is known about the flowers and fruits .
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia pailana is common in the Mexican state of Coahuila in the Sierra de la Paila .
The first description by Wilhelm Weingart was published in 1929.
