The Altunizade Mosque ( Turkish Altunizade Camii ), also İsmail-Zühü-Pascha Mosque ( Turkish İsmail Zühü Paşa Camii ) after its builder , is a mosque in Istanbul that was built in the 19th century during the Ottoman Empire .

location

Altunizade Mosque

The mosque is located in the Altunizade district in Istanbul's Üsküdar district at Tophanelioğlu Caddesi 20–22 . There are low residential and office buildings around the building. A small park with a fountain surrounds the building in the west and south-west.

history

The architect, writer and politician Altunizade İsmail Zühü Pascha (1806–1887), who was also buried in the mosque's garden, commissioned the construction of the mosque . The building was erected according to two inscriptions in 1282 (AH) (1865/66 AD) and is probably the last example of Ottoman architecture in the Asian part of Istanbul. The mosque was initially part of a Külliye with a primary school, a Turkish bath, two symmetrical apartments for the imam and the muezzin , a bakery and a few shops. However, only a few rooms have survived today. The two-story school building now serves as an apartment, the hammam was measured and renovated in 1988 .

architecture

Ceiling with dome

The mosque was built in the neo-baroque style of late Ottoman architecture, which can be recognized by the large windows. The building has a small courtyard with a covered Şadirvan and three gates. There is an inscription on the largest gate.

A small vestibule leads to the prayer room through one large and two small doors. The small ornamented mihrab is in the wall facing the vestibule. Two wooden stairs lead to the women's area and the muezzin's square. The mosque was built over a rectangular plan and made of limestone. The walls of the prayer room are decorated with hand-carved figures.

The mosque also has a dome supported by four arches on pillars. The inside of the dome is divided into 16 areas, which are alternately decorated with two patterns. The center of the dome is blue and contains verses from the Koran. The pendants and walls are also richly painted.

The minbar is made of marble and has the shape of a drinking glass. It is similar to the one in the Hırka-i-Serif Mosque . The windows are unusually large and are a classic example of Ottoman neo-baroque architecture. In the lower row there are three large windows on the side walls and two large ones flank the mihrab wall. In the upper row there are again three windows on each side, in the middle two small windows flank the large one.

The mosque also has a round minaret over a square base. The balcony is richly decorated. The spire of the minaret is made of stone, in contrast to the sheet-covered tops of classic Ottoman mosque architecture. The shape of the tip is reminiscent of the turban of a grand vizier. There is a line of stars in the center of the minaret.
