Alysson is a genus of digger wasps (Spheciformes) from the family Crabronidae . The genus occurs in Europe with six species.
Way of life
The Alysson species usually nest in relatively cool and humid habitats, often on river banks and sandbanks, but also on firm ground. However, the Central European species lay their nests in dry and warm sand habitats, such as steep sandy slopes. The nest of Central European species probably consists of only one cell at the end of a main course, but American and Asian species also create nests with several cells. The excavation is heaped up around the nest entrance, which is on the side, as a hill. The nest entrance is not closed when leaving the nesting site. If the female returns with prey, it flies quickly into the nest without dropping the prey. This consists of dwarf leaf hoppers (Cicadellidae), more rarely blood leaf hoppers (Cercopidae) or species of the pointed-head leaf hoppers (Fulgoromorpha). The prey is transported partly in flight, partly on the ground with the belly up. The last part to the nest, the prey is always transported on the ground. It is packed at the base with the mandibles . The eggs are laid on one of the last prey that was entered into the nest. The stunned cicadas die after just a few days and spoil quickly.
