Am Rothenbaum is a tennis complex in the Harvestehude district of the city of Hamburg . The complex has 13 red sand courts and belongs to the club on the Alster .

history

The Hamburg Rothenbaum is one of the oldest facilities in world tennis. The site has been the venue for important tennis tournaments since 1892. The ATP Hamburg is currently being played here . From 1896 to 2002, women's tournaments were also held here ( WTA Hamburg ). The site is the seat of the German Tennis Association (DTB).

The main square was given a roof in 1997, the membrane of which is stretched over steel cables like an umbrella , and has been enlarged to 13,200 places.

In 2017 and 2018 the final of the FIVB World Tour took place in the Am Rothenbaum stadium. From June 28 to July 7, 2019, the beach volleyball world championship was held on the facility.

Remodeling plans and renovations from 2018

Major renovation work in the stadium and modernization of the entire facility were planned from 2018 to 2022. The current stadium was also to be demolished and a newer, significantly smaller one with 7500 seats built. The parties involved in the construction could not agree on a common procedure, so that the stadium remained unchanged for the time being.

In January 2019 it was decided to renovate the facility for ten million euros. As a first step, the dilapidated roof of the main square was renewed and the benches on the adjacent squares were renovated. This work was finished in June. After the 2019 tennis tournament, the capacity of the Center Court will be reduced from around 13,200 to around 10,000.
