Amadou Sanneh

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amadou Sanneh (* 20th century) is an accountant and politician in the West African state of Gambia . From June 2018 to March 2019 he was Minister of Trade, Regional Integration and Employment in the Adama Barrow cabinet .

Life

Sanneh trained as an accountant and was employed for some time in the First Republic of the Gambia as chief accountant in the Gambia. He also ran a private company called AA Co. for a time. In 2010 he worked at the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) as an auditor.

Sanneh has been involved in the United Democratic Party (UDP) since 1995 and is its treasurer.

Sanneh was arrested during the 1996 presidential election. In late 2013, Sanneh wrote a letter of support for Malang Fatty, who intended to apply for asylum abroad. In the letter, Sanneh alleged that Fatty was the recipient of death threats from state security forces and that UDP was routinely tracked by the Gambian government. On September 19, 2013, Fatty was arrested by the Gambian National Intelligence Agency (NIA) at the border crossing near Amdallai when he was trying to leave the country. At the time of his arrest, Fatty was in possession of Sanneh's letter. The NIA also arrested Alhagie Sambou Fatty, Malang Fatty's brother, who asked Sanneh to write the letter. Sanneh himself was arrested by NIA agents on September 25, 2013. Sanneh and the Fatty brothers were detained without contact for almost a month, and all three claimed that they were tortured during that time. On October 9th, they were brought before a judge, Malang Fatty and Alhagie Sambou Fatty pleaded guilty, and Sanneh pleaded not guilty. The trial began on November 7, 2013 in the Special Criminal Court. On December 18, 2013, all three were sentenced to five years in prison by Emmanuel Nkea. Amnesty International was one of the organizations that condemned the verdict and issued a statement: "The convictions of three opposition politicians in Gambia must be overturned and the authorities must release them immediately and unconditionally." An appeal was filed in July 2015, but the Trial was lost after Judges Edrissa M'Bai and Na-Ceesay found no miscarriage of justice in the original case.

Sanneh was released from custody on January 30, 2017 by the newly elected President Adama Barrow , who was deputy treasurer of the UDP from 2006, and was appointed to his cabinet on February 1 as Minister of Finance and Economy .

With a larger Cabinet reshuffle on June 29, 2018 Sanneh Minister of Trade, Regional Integration and Employment ( English Minister of Trade, Regional Integration and Employment ). On March 15, 2019, he was released from the cabinet after a minor reshuffle.

Sanneh is married to Haddijatou Sanneh, a former employee of Gambia International Airlines . In 2002 she lost her job because of her connection to UDP through her husband following the Haddijatou Sanneh court case against Gambia International Airline Civil Suit No. 73/2002.
