life and work

Amalie (also Amalia) Schneider-Schlöth was a daughter of the master locksmith and stove manufacturer Friedrich Ludwig Schlöth. Her mother Veronika Amalie nee Tireck died when she was 15 years old. Amalie Schneider-Schlöth was a niece of the sculptor Ferdinand Schlöth , with whom she maintained a lively correspondence, only partly in private ownership, until her marriage. In 1877 it published the Basler Kochschule , which comprises over 600 pages and appeared in numerous, partly revised editions. It forms a comprehensive compendium of middle-class food culture in the 19th century with a high source value. In 1935 the book was touted in the Swiss teachers' newspaper as “a set of teaching and recipes that meet the most extensive requirements”, suitable for “home economics teachers , boarding mothers, housewives and young daughters”. In addition to almost 2500 recipes calculated for four people and 200 menus based on the seasons, the book also contains instructions for preserving food, handling cooking utensils, decorating plates, preparing fruit juices and folding serviettes .

Amalie Schneider-Schlöth was a half-sister of the sculptor Achilles Schlöth . She was married to the merchant Gottlieb Schneider and had two daughters, Amalie and Wilhelmine.
