Amalie Therese Luise Wilhelmine Philippine von Württemberg (born June 28, 1799 in Wallisfurth , † November 28, 1848 in Altenburg ) was a Duchess of Württemberg and by marriage Duchess of Saxony-Altenburg .

Life

Amalie was a daughter of Duke Ludwig Friedrich von Württemberg and his wife Princess Henriette von Nassau-Weilburg . Amalie was a niece of King Friedrich I of Württemberg and the Russian Tsarina Maria Feodorovna . Her religious and witty mother had a major influence on the upbringing of the princess in Kirchheim unter Teck , where Amalie grew up.

On April 24, 1817, Amalie married the Hereditary Prince Joseph of Saxony-Hildburghausen in Kirchheim . In 1825 the Hereditary Princess, like all members of the House of Württemberg, was awarded the title “ Royal Highness ” by the King of Württemberg .

In 1819, Amalie founded the industrial school for children of poor parents in Hildburghausen , and a year later she founded a women's association. In 1826 Joseph's father Friedrich became Duke of Saxony-Altenburg and the family moved into the new residence . Amalie's husband succeeded his father as Duke of Saxe-Altenburg in 1834.

In 1835, the Duchess founded an infant care facility in Altenburg as the Amalien Foundation, and a similar institution two years later in Kahla .

Amalie was described as energetic and proud, which in large part made the ducal couple unpopular. It contributed significantly to the escalation of events during the bourgeois revolution in Altenburg in 1848. During these events, the Duchess died on November 28, 1848 and her husband abdicated two days later.

progeny

Amalie had six daughters from their marriage, which is why her husband renounced the government in favor of his brother.
