The Amandla Festival was a World Music - Festival , which on 21st July 1979 at Harvard Stadium in Cambridge in Boston ( Massachusetts took place). The festival was a protest against the apartheid regime in South Africa and at the same time a benefit concert . 30,000 spectators attended the festival.

The word "Amandla" comes from the South African Zulu language and means "strength", "strength" or "energy". One of the headliners of the festival was Bob Marley & The Wailers . During his performance Marley gave controversial speeches about the failure of the western Babylon system and called for the unification of the African peoples. These concert stage speeches were unusual for Marley as he was usually threatened with censorship for speaking so openly about the system's ineptitude and marijuana smoking . Other musicians who performed at the festival included R&B / soul legend Patti LaBelle , jazz pianist Eddie Palmieri , Nigerian drummer Babatunde Olatunji , South African band Jabula and comedian Dick Gregory , who also gave a politically controversial speech before Marley's performance.
