Amara Lakhous

Amara Lakhous (* 1970 in Algiers , Algeria ) is an Algerian author , journalist and translator .

Life

Lakhous was born in the Algerian capital Algiers as the sixth of nine children of a Berber family. At the age of four he learned the classical Arabic of the Koran in a Koran school . In elementary school he learned the French language and thus became the linguistic mediator between the Algerian and the French part of his family.

After graduating from high school, Lakhous studied at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Algiers Benyoucef Benkhedda , where he also received his doctorate . After 1994 he worked for the Algerian state radio and was exposed to numerous hostilities. In 1995 he fled the terror raging in Algeria to Rome with a manuscript in his luggage. In Rome he continued his studies at La Sapienza University in cultural anthropology , where he received his doctorate, this time on the subject of Arab-Muslim refugees in Italy.

Lakhous has worked as a mediator and translator in the Italian refugee camps for years and worked from 2003 to 2006 as a journalist for the Roman press agency Adnkronos .

Lakhous' first book, Le cimici e il pirata , was published in 1999 in two languages, Arabic and Italian. In 2003 his second book was published in Algeria in Italian. Of the following three books in Italian, two have so far been published in Germany.

Lakhous is known in Germany for his readings in the Lettrétage in Berlin-Kreuzberg and as a participant in the Berlin International Literature Festival in 2010. He works and lives in Rome.
