Amaro da Luz

Amaro Alexandre da Luz (born June 4, 1934 in Santo Antão ; † October 4, 2019 in Praia ) was a Cape Verdean politician , economist , diplomat and freedom fighter .

Amaro Alexandre da Luz was born on the island of Santo Antao and studied in Portugal Economics , where he also received his doctorate . Then he returned to Cape Verde and took part in the negotiations for the country's independence in London with Pedro Pires and Mario Soares . He also held a management position at the Cape Verdean bank Banco Nacional Ultramarino.

From 1975 to 1977 he was the first finance minister of the independent state of Cape Verde. Then he went to New York City as its ambassador to the United Nations from 1977 to 1984 .

He was head of the Cape Verdean Central Bank from 1984 to 1991. In this role, he reformed the credit, savings and emigration accounts of the country's financial sector.

In 2012 he was awarded the official title of "Co-Founder of the First Republic of Cape Verde" by then Prime Minister José Maria Neves, along with twelve others.

On October 4, 2019, Amaro da Luz died at the age of 85 in the Agostinho Neto Hospital in Praia and was buried in the Cemeterio de Varzea in Praia.
