The Amathinidae are a family mostly very small to small, exclusively marine snails within the Heterobranchia . They live as ectoparasites on mussels.

features

The shells of the Amathinidae resemble those of limpets or periwinkles and usually have a well-developed periostracum . There is a clear spiral sculpture, while axially at best weak lamellae are formed. The protoconch is left-handed in some species, while the rest of the case is right-handed. An operculum is only present in some species.

The foot of the Amathinidae is divided into a thin, movable mesopodium and a disc-shaped metapodium, slightly notched at the center line. The eyes sit between the two rabbit-shaped antennae. In contrast to the related Pyramidellidae , the Amathinidae do not have a hypobranchial gland , but there is a large mantle gland in the mantle cavity to the right of the folded gill.

The snails have a very long and thin proboscis that can be used to pierce host animals. The jaws and radula are missing, as are stilettos on the trunk. Instead of pines, there is a chitinous valve-like structure.

The animals are hermaphrodites that produce sperm and egg cells at the same time. The pointed penis can be withdrawn into a tube under the nerve ring.

As far as is known, the animals live as ectoparasites on mussels .

Systematics

According to Bouchet and Rocroi (2005) the family Amathinidae forms with the family Pyramidellidae JE Gray, in 1840 the superfamily Pyramidelloidea . The Amathinidae family has about 30 species in 6 genera.

The genera in the Amathinidae family are:

The two genera Adelactaeon Cossmann, 1895 and Myonia A. Adams, 1860 are synonyms of Leucotina A. Adams, 1860.
